HOW SEXUAL SIN IS BORN (Character systems)

I want to bring to an end the series on the character systems of the believer. This is also a sequel to what I taught last week on Overcoming sexual immorality.

This statement sometimes confuse people because we always hear the phrase ‘I didn’t intend doing it, but…’ when it comes to sexual sin. But sexual sin has a definite process it follows. We saw the various stages from James 1:13-15

James 1:13-15
“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts he any man:”
“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.”
“Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.”

We see the various stages as follows;
1. Drawn
2. Enticed
3. Conception
4. Sin
5. Death

Sexual sin always start with an invitation. The invitation is called temptation. It is like a door that has been opened. Temptation is a door we enter (Mt 26;41)

There is always an external stimuli when it comes to sexual sin. A stimulus is something which causes a part of your body to react. The sexual attraction between man and woman is of God’s making and is therefore natural.

Therefore sexual sin begins with an attraction to the opposite sex. There are many things that point us to sexual sin. All of these are sexual stimuli. They can include friends who will suggest something to you, a movie that will show a sex scene, a strange man or woman who attempts to lure you, or innocent people who inadvertently lead you to think about sex.

Everybody will be tempted. To be tempted is not a sin. Even Jesus was tempted in every way imaginable (Heb 4:15)

The invitation has an address. The address is the flesh. The flesh is the thought patterns, weaknesses, inclinations and bents to evil that are resident in us. Even if you are born again, the these evil patterns are still in you in your mind and body.

When the invitation is served, it starts burning in your mind. The flesh, who is a traitor within you will begin to bring out sexual scenes or experiences which are stored in your “archives” and will try to convince you to accept the invitation.

For many people, at this point they think that thought could never influence them. The strength of sexual sin is secrecy. It thrives on the following principle

Proverbs 9:17
“Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”

The flesh start interacting with the invitation . At this point your body is even reacting to the thought. This is a time to flee or seek external help. If you don’t do anything about it, you will proceed to the next stage which is the conception stage.

This is the stage where you actually decide to do it. At this point, you have examined all the pictures, scenes and experiences the flesh, the traitor within, has been showing you and you have decided to do it.

You may still be deceived into thinking that you will only go thus far. You can still break the process at this point. You can still flee. If you don’t make a definite decision to flee physically, you will move on to the next stage which is the stage of committing the actual sin.

The transition from the 3rd stage to the 4th stage is very fast so you may think it was an accident. This is where the actual thing happens. It may start with low intensity and rise with time. At this point it is almost too late. You start getting physical with the opposite sex and you end up actually committing the very act.

Death here is used figuratively to suggest the lowest point. Sexual sin leads to a very low moment in your life. The devil will accuse you, your heart will condemn you, the Holy Spirit will call you back to repentance. But usually many things take place.
This is where you will really understand that sexual sin is a sin against your own body.

The Bible never gives any positive thing as a consequence of sexual sin. The end is always bad. Look at how the Bible describes the consequences of sexual sin.
a. Wormwood (Prov 5:3)
b. Slaughter (Prov 7:22-23)
c. Wounds and Hell (Prov 7:25-27)
d. Piece of bread (Prov 6:24-26)
e. Hunted (Prov 6:26)

Samson had his eyes (removed) after putting his head on Delilah’s lap.

Only one drug has been prescribed for us to save us from sexual sin. That drug is FLEE (2 Tim 2:22, 1 Cor 6:18)
FLEE means avoid (Rom 13;14)
FLEE means leave physically (Gen 39;10)
FLEE may mean change your route, delete the number etc.
FLEE means get a spiritual person and open up to him or her for accountability
FLEE may mean burn those materials.

When it comes to sexual sin, wisdom is seen in fleeing and avoidance not in endurance.
