Jeremiah 50:6
My people
have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray. They have turned
them away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill. They have
forgotten their resting place(NKJV).
Matthew 11:28
Come unto Me, all you who labor and are
heavy laden, and I will give you rest(NKJV)
The duty of men and women of God is
not to offer solutions and formulae to the people they lead but to help them to
cultivate that personal relationship with the only one who can solve their problems,
the Lord Jesus Christ.
The fivefold ministry offices were not
given to act as mediators or agents between God and His children. God doesn’t
want agents. He wants a direct relationship with each of His children. No
branch of the Vine grows on another branch. Each one is attached to the Vine
There are three invitations Jesus gave
to us. They are: Come unto ME, Abide in ME, Follow ME. All three invitations
were to Him personally and not to an institution, creed or activity.
This means that our main assignment is
to lead the people to a place where they can grow to know Him personally.
The sad situation in the Church today
is that we have led the people to token, symbols, creed, principles etc and
have not led them into personal relationship. Today it’s some special oil,
tomorrow it’s some special water, the next day it’s some special ‘seed’ they
must sow, another time it’s some special steps, principles or formulae they
must apply for their breakthrough. Abraham offered only one Isaac, but many
believers’ have been instructed time and time again to ‘sow’ their ‘Isaacs’ for
that breakthrough.
The result is the ‘sheep’ have become
tired, disillusioned, disgruntled and hassled.
Man of God, help your followers to
know the Lord for themselves. Teach them how to go to God so that they don’t
have to come to you. Don’t build the ministry around you or your personality.
The central focus should be Christ. We must make a conscious effort to divert
the focus from us onto Christ. Teach them how to pray for themselves because
one day your phone may be off.
The duty of the Apostle is not to
perform for them to watch but to ground them in the truth to ensure growth into
Him who is the head, the duty of the prophet is not to hear God for them. But
to equip them to hear God for themselves. The duty of the evangelist is to
ignite a passion for lost souls in them. The duty of the pastor is to inspire
them to shepherd one another in love. The duty of the teacher is to provoke in
them a thirst for the truth so that they can delve deeper in the word.
That is what the Bible means by
equipping the Saints.
