Central Text: Hebrews 2:18

INTRODUCTION:

The author is
focused on his argument that Christ is superior to the Old Testament High
priest and thus Christianity is superior to Judaism. One of the advantages of
having a merciful high priest is that He is able to help us in times of
temptations because He Himself suffered temptation. We will examine the
temptation of Jesus and learn something from it.

 MAIN LESSON:

 A. THE PURPOSE OF TEMPTATION?*

1. It is an
opportunity within or outside you to disobey God or rebel against His commands.

2. Temptation
is a door the enemy opens for you to enter(Mt
26:41)
. To be tempted is not the issue, even Jesus was tempted(Heb 4:15). But to yield to it or not is
the issue.

3. The tempter
is the devil(Mt 4:3, 1Thess 3:5). God
doesn’t tempt us with evil(James 1:13). He
can however test us(Gen 22:1).

4. The purpose
of the temptation is to get us to sin against God so that we will miss iHiHis good plans for us(Rev 2:14, Num 25:1-3)

B. THE PLAN OF TEMPTATION

1. It is suited
to your needs or lack(Luke 4:2-3).
It was when Jesus was hungry that the devil tempted Him to turn stones into
bread. What other practical ways can satan tempt us?

2. It is suited
to your desires(James 1:13-14). How
can the things we desire make us fall into temptations?(Gen 3:6)

3. It is suited
to your weakness(Mt 26:41).

4. It is suited
to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life(1 John 2:15-17, Gen 3:6). Give
examples of each of these three dimensional foundation of temptation.

C. THE PROCESS OF TEMPTATION

1. Sinning or
rebelling against God is not an accident. It goes through a process. You can
stop the process. When you stop the process, you have overcome the temptation(Gen 4:7)

2. The various
processes every temptation goes through are as follows:

a. The invitation
stage:
This
is where the tempter suggests or pumps the idea into your mind. At this stage,
it is only a fleeting thought.

The battle is won
or lost in the mind.

What do we do to evil or negative thoughts?(2 Cor 10:4-5).

b. The welcoming
stage:
If
you don’t reject the thought immediately, you will come to this stage. This is
where you start thinking about it. It is
often said that you cant prevent the bird from flying over your head but you can
surely prevent it from making her nest on your head.

At this stage, the idea of the tempter starts
interacting with the evil desires that are already in you.

A little explanation:

Every
invitation is directed at the traitor within which is the flesh(evil desires in
us). He welcomes the thought and they start their interaction. The traitor
within has a whole store of evil desires and archives of all the bad things we
have ever received into us through our five senses. He then goes to pick one of
them and start the interaction with the fiery arrow. At this point you start
imagining how sweet the sin would be. He(the traitor) brings out picture after
picture or stories after stories and shows you that it could be ‘fun’ as any of
them.

You can abort the process now if you want to. If you
don’t abort it, you move to the next stage.

c. The   fertilization stage: This is the stage
where the desire becomes an intent. Now the lustful thought that came from
outside has been welcome and has also been fertilized by the traitor within.
From this point onwards, the intent has been formed. It only keeps on
increasing in intensity till you get to an action point. At this point, you
need external help

d. The action
point:
This
is the point where the person couldn’t pass the test but entered into the
temptation.

e. The lowest
point:
After
falling into the temptation and committing the sin, three things happen.

The Holy Spirit is grieved: The Holy Spirit was there
with you  throughout the process to help
you. But you never made use of His help. So He is grieved(Eph 4:30).

Your own spirit is angry and convicts you: Your born
again spirit didn’t like the whole thing, it kept on telling you no! no! but
you wouldn’t listen because the traitor within was also showing you some
powerful pictures. So your own spirit convicts you.(Please note that when a believer
sins, it is his own spirit or heart that convicts him. The Holy Spirit does not
convict the believer of sin. He only convicts the world of sin. However He is
grieved by our sins. Check these scriptures out; 1John 3:19-21, John 16:8-10,
Ephesians 4:30

The devil is happy and accusing you: As
for the devil, the moment you fell into the sin, he moved from being your
tempter to being your accuser. He will come and tell you that you are not even
qualified to come before God.

Verse:

Hebrews 2:18

For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He
is able to aid those who are tempted(NKJV)
