CENTRAL TEXT: Hebrews 2:5-8

Introduction:
The author is still trying to prove the superiority of the Son of God over the Angels.  He takes the argument into the humanity of Jesus. Somebody may say that Jesus coming in the form of man makes him lower than the Angels. The author refutes that by saying that even on earth, man is the one dominion was given to. We will now take time to look into the dominion mandate. In our next lesson we will see why Jesus had to come in the form of man.
Main Lesson:
A)    THE DIVINE EDICT
Genesis 1:26
Then God Said, Let Us make man in our image, according to our likeness; LET THEM HAVE DOMINION over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, OVER ALL THE EARTH and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth (NKJV).
Dominion means to take charge over a territory as the ruler, governor, manager and administrator. Therefore God wanted Adam to be the ruler, not owner, of the earth.
1.                  When God said this, He meant every word of it. Note that He didn’t say “And let Us have dominion”, BUT “Let Them have dominion …. over all the earth.
2.                  The earth was made for man and it will forever be the abode of man (Ps 115:16, Is 45:18, Rev 21:1).
3.                  Mankind is the only being mandated to have dominion over the earth.
4.                   When God made a body for man, He by that act excluded all spirits without physical bodies from exercising dominion over the earth (Gen 2:7).
5.                  Therefore, our bodies are a badge of authority. Both God and satan needs a physical body to operate legally on this earth. That is why the devil borrowed the body of a serpent in order to approach Eve (Gen 3:1).
6.                  Demons are desperate to enter into bodies because without physical bodies, they cannot fully express themselves (Luke 10:31-33).
7.                  Therefore, the right to operate on this earth and exercise dominion is for the sons of man (John 5:26-27).
8.                  So even though Angels are more powerful than men, we have more authority than them. Therefore, even the new earth will not be in their care (Heb 2:5).
B)    ADAM’S DOMINION
Adams’s dominion was a physical dominion. He was to rule and direct the physical earth. The earth was man’s domain. Note the limits of his dominion in Genesis 1:26 (the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, all the earth, every creeping thing).
As part of his mandate, Adam had the right to
a)      Determine the name or identity of all the Animals (Gen 2:20).
b)      Dress and keep the earth (Gen 2:15).
c)      Rule the animal world. The fear of man was on the animals.
d)     Control the affairs of the earth with wisdom.
C)    THE FALL OF MAN.
Man fell short of God’s plans for him and lost his place with God. Therefore man couldn’t fulfill all of God’s purpose for him.
That is why it says But now we do not see all things put under him’.
Summary:
Adam was given dominion over the earth but lost it through disobedience. In our next lesson we will see how Jesus came to restore what Adam lost.
