CENTRAL TEXT: HEBREWS 4:12-13
Introduction:
The writer of Hebrews in persuading the backsliding Hebrews that Christianity is far more superior makes reference to the Word of God. Why the reference to the word? He wanted to point out the fact that word of God is powerful and sharp and that if the New Testament is supported by the Word Himself, then it is superior to the old. The Old Testament was brought by Moses but the New Testament came by Jesus who was the Word made flesh (John 1:1-4, 14, 17).  We will now examine the nature of the Word of God.
MAIN LESSON:
WHAT IS THE WORD?
i)                    The Word of God exists in so many different forms. Just as water can be liquid, solid and gaseous.
ii)                  Anytime God expresses Himself, it is the Word of God.

THE LIVING WORD
Jesus Christ is the personified Word of God. Note that somebody’s word represents his intentions, will and desire.
Jesus therefore sums up God in person.
Hebrews 1:1-3, John 1:1-14
When we become Born again, the Spirit of Christ comes to live in us. That is the Living Word. 1 John 3:9, 1Pet 1:23, Rom 8:9, Gal 4:6

THE SPOKEN WORD
1.      God is a speaking God. Gen 1:1-. Heb 1:1
This talks of every word that comes from the lips of God. Under this we have two main types.

a. THE SCRIPTURES
The Bible is God’s attempt to make Himself known to man at man’s own level.
I) The Word Scriptures means writings. The Greek Word is GRAPHO and it suggests engraved writings, showing the permanent nature of what is written.

II) The Spirit of God backs every Word that is in the Bible.

2 Tim 3:14-16, 2 Pet 1:20-221

What is written in the Bible is the Spoken Word which has been captured in writing. It is called the Constant Word.
It represents the spoken and declared will, ways and desires of God.
The Word of God whether in the literal sense of a spoken word or in the Written form or the personified form is called LOGOS. Eg) John 1:14, Heb 4:12

b. THE PROCEEDING WORD
Matthew 4:4
The proceeding Word is a word in the scriptures quickened or made alive to you by the Living Word (Holy Spirit) to meet a specific situation or to give direction.
We call it the INSTANT WORD. That is what can defeat the devil.
Ephesians 6:17 The Greek Word used here for ‘word’ is RHEMA.

1. When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He quoted words from the Scriptures (Matt 4:4-Deut 8:3, Matt 4:6-Deut 6:16, Matt 4:8, Deut 6:13).

2. The Rhema is what gives us daily nourishment, daily direction, etc. We should be grounded in the written Word so that the Holy Spirit can always quicken a Word to meet a specific situation.

  c. THE IMPLANTED WORD
James 1:21
1.      The Implanted Word is when the Word gets into our Spirits. That is what will cause change.
2.      The destiny of every Word of God is to become flesh. That is to be manifested in somebody’s life.

3. When the Word of God becomes flesh in our lives, we become living epistles of Christ. 2 Cor 3:2-3.

4. It is the implanted Word which saves our souls. The Soul is made up of our minds, will and emotions. Salvation of the soul is seen when the mind is renewed to think like God, the Will is controlled to do only the will of God and the emotions has been trained to be sad when God is sad and to be happy when He is
THE NATURE OF THE WORD
The Bible compares the Word of God to a number of things to show us the nature and power of the Word.
1)      FIRE – JER 5:14
The Word is like fire, able to devour and burn all chaff.
2)      A CRUSHING HAMMER- JER 23:29
It is able to break us for God to mould us again.
3)      A MIRROR- JAMES 1:23, 2 COR 3:18
It exposes us and shows us where we are wrong
4)      A SEED- 1PET 1:23, LK 8:4, ACTS 12:24, MK 4:14
This shows that the Word when planted in our hearts grow and bears fruit
5)      A LIGHT- PS 119:105, PS 119:130
It guides us. It gives us directions.
6)      WATER- EPH 5:26, PS 119:9, JOHN 15:3, 1 PET 1:22
It talks about the cleansing power of the Word.
7)      RAIN- ISAIAH 55:10
It has the ability to cause things to grow
8)      A SWORD- HEBREWS 4:12, EPH 6:17
          It pierces
          It divides
It cuts deep; the Word does a thorough work in us that no other medicine or modern psychology can do.
9)      FOOD
          Milk- 1Pet 2:2
          Bread- Mt 4:4
          Strong Meat- Hebrews 5:11-14
          Honey- Ps 19:10
It is the Word of God that can feed the human Spirit.
It is also the Word that gives the Holy Spirit something to work with.

    THE INTEGRITY OF THE WORD
1)      The Word of God is God Himself
John 1:1
2)      The Word of God contains the life or nature of God
John 1:3, 1Peter 1:23
3)      All things were created by the Word of God.
John 1:4, Hebrews 11:4
4)      All things are sustained by the Word
Hebrews 1:3-4
5)      God cannot lie; therefore, His Word can never lie.
  Titus 1:5
6)      Words are expressed thoughts, will, desires, inclination and imaginations. Therefore, the Word of God is the expression of God.
Isaiah 55:8
7)      Once a Word comes from God’s lips, it will accomplish His purpose and it can never fail.
Isaiah 55:9-11, Ps 119:89, Ps 84:34
8)      God submits Himself to His word and is bound by whatever He says.
Ps 138:2, Numbers 23:19
9)      God is ever mindful of His Word.
Ps 111:5, Jer 1:12, Lk 1:45

THE THREE-FOLD ABILITY OF THE WORD

1.      THE WORD IS ABLE TO BUILD – Acts 20:32
2.      THE WORD IS ABLE TO MAKE – 2 TIMOTHY 3:15
3.      THE WORD IS ABLE TO SAVE – JAMES 1:21
MEMORY VERSE

HEBREWS 4:12: For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (NKJV).
