CENTRAL TEXT: HEBREWS 4:16

INTRODUCTION:
We are still examining the throne of grace. We saw in our previous lesson that our sins are not just covered in the New Testament but they are washed away. We also saw that because of that we are to come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and to find grace to help in our time of need. In this lesson, we explore the two aspects of grace; mercy and help.
MAIN LESSON:
A. THE MERCY LEG OF GRACE
1. Here, we are talking about forgiveness for our sins. To sin means to miss the mark. Any evil we do is sin (1 John 3:4), any good we refuse to do is also sin (James 4:17), not walking according to the light we have is sin (Rom 14:23).
2. SIN has been dealt with by the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus (Heb 9:26, Rom 8:3, 1John 1:29).
3. SINs which refers to the evil deeds of the body must be dealt with by bringing them in the light (John 1:7).
4. Bringing them into the light means exposing them. Light exposes (Eph 5:13). Therefore bringing them into the light talks about confessing them.
5. To confess is to agree. To agree is to expose. To expose is to bring it to light. That brings healing.
6. Walking in the light helps our conscience and our relationship with our brothers (Acts 24:16). Here it means that we confess our sins because our conscience pricks us. Anytime our conscience pricks us, it means we are missing it. It is not the Holy Spirit who convicts us. He convicts the world (John 16:8). It is our hearts or conscience that convicts us (1 John 3:20-21).
7. When our conscience pricks us, we lose confidence before God (1John 3:21). That is why we must confess (bring it into the light). As soon as we bring it into the light, the blood is available to cleanse us (1 John 1:7).
8. Therefore confessing of sins is for the believer, not the unbeliever. The believer must confess his sins to God (1John 1:9). He must also confess to his fellow believer if the sin was done to his fellow believer, so that he can enjoy fellowship with his brother (James 5:16).
9. The unbeliever is not supposed to confess his Sins. His problems is not the sins he is committing but the SIN in him. He must confess the Lordship of Jesus to pass from spiritual death into life (Rom 10:9-10).
B. THE HELP LEG OF GRACE
1. Apart from dealing with our sins the grace of God is to help us live the life that is deposited in us in seed form.
2. Therefore the help leg of grace enables us to grow into maturity, sonship and glory (Ps 84:11).
3. We are therefore to take the help and grow accordingly to become like Christ.
4. Therefore grace teaches us to depart from our evil deeds (Titus 2:11).
5. Grace enables us to become (1 Cor 15:10).
6. Grace strengthens (Heb 13:9).
7. Grace builds us up (Acts 20:32).
8. We are take advantage of the grace (Help) God gives and work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Phil 2:12).
9. We should not waste the grace (2 Cor 6:1).
10. Therefore any believer who refuses to grow and persists in sin will answer before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Cor 5:10-11)
