A lot of people get into marriage with a lot of misconceptions. One thing that has really been misunderstood is love. Many young people use soap operas and telenovelas as their standard. They enter into marriage thinking that love is when you are served breakfast in bed, or that, love is being swept off the floor in your husband’s arms or something that tickles the emotions etc.

Now I know all that can be part of the expression of love in marriage. But understand that, that is not going to be so everyday. Reality of the married life will let you expand your definition of love from just mere emotional feelings and sentimentality to cover things like being less selfish, thinking of ways to make your spouse less burdened etc.

The bible is very clear that love is proved by labour. We all know the scripture which says love is the greatest. 1 Cor 13:13

1 Corinthians 13:13
“And now abides faith, hope, love (agape), these three; but the greatest of these is love (agape).”

The bible goes on to show us how this love WORKS.

1 Thessalonians 1:3
“Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, (agape) and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;”

Here we see that faith is proved by works, Hope is proved by patience and love is proved by labour. Let’s look at another scripture.

Hebrews 6:10
“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love (agape), which all of you have showed toward his name, in that all of you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.”

Here too, love is linked to labour. When you love somebody you will labour for the person.

Secondly, it takes a willingness to labour not to give up loving people. Jacob laboured for the woman he loved and he enjoyed the labour.

Genesis 29:20
“And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.”

This is LOVE. Love is a labour not favour. Make up your mind that you will labour for the one you love. You will serve, spend and be spent for him or her. That is love. It goes beyond words. It is action.
