1 Kings 19:19
So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of
Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was on the
twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his MANTLE on him(NKJV)
2 kings 2:12-13
And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My Father, my
Father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more……13 He
also took up the MANTLE of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and
stood by the bank of the Jordan(NKJV)
These two scriptures show us the two mantles in Elisha’s
ministry. The first one was given to him free of charge, but he had to pay a
price for the second one. The first one was the foretaste while the second one
was the full taste. The first one was the initial oil, which is always free
while the second one was the extra oil which has to be bought (Mt 25:9).
From the first mantle to the second mantle is a process.
This process can be summarized by three words; Impartation, Incubation,
Manifestation. Impartation is when you receive the oil, the call or the initial
blessing. After that, you are taken through a process through which God
prepares you thoroughly. After that you come to a place of manifestation where
God sets you in your unique place in the body. This is the place of your own
mantle. The one you have paid a price for.
This journey to the second mantle is often torturous and
winding. It is full of twists and turns. It is a labyrinthine arrangement of
circumstances, situations and events that will bring you to the end of yourself
for the glory of God to be seen. After going through that process, you are
refined, purified and fine-tuned for your purpose and assignment.
Some of the things that constitute this process to the
second mantle may look negative but they are God’s tools to prepare you for
your unique assignment. Do you want to see the glory of God in your ministry?
Then listen to this. The glory of God will only come when a path has been
created for it in your heart. The whole thing is a heart issue. The process
does a work in your heart that prepares and shapes you for your second mantle.
A picture of the kind of work that God does in our hearts is in Isaiah 40:3.
The mountains will be brought low, the valleys shall be exalted, the crooked
places shall be straightened, the rough places shall be made smooth. Then and
only then, shall all flesh see the GLORY of God.
That is why the process we go through is often painful.
On the journey to your second mantle you will encounter dark moments. These are
periods in your ministry where you simply don’t know what to do. You can’t see
clearly and you feel so lost. It’s nothing new. Everybody who wants to get to
the second mantle will go through that. Even Jesus had his dark moment (Luke
22:52-53). There are times that you will come to seeming dead ends. It is
normal. Your dead ends are the beginning of God’s life lines. You will get to
points where you will encounter seeming contradictions. Your circumstances will
be the exact opposite of the prophecies, dreams and visions you have received.
Relax. You are in good company. You are on the road to the extra oil. That is
the price you pay for it. Abraham was promised numerous descendants when he
didn’t have even one child. He had to endure the embarrassment of dedicating
the children his 318 slaves were producing while he himself could not produce.
He had a great ‘Word’ from God but nothing physical or tangible to show for. As
if that was not enough, God added to his problems by changing his name into
Abraham (Father of many nations). Many people can tolerate you when you call
yourself Abram (exalted Father) and you don’t have a child. But few can
tolerate the ‘madness’ in calling yourself Abraham (Father of many nations)
without children to prove it. You will even come to a point of seeming breach
of God’s promise. Jeremiah got to that point where he said God had deceived him
(Jeremiah 20:7-9). All these things are arranged by God to bring down mountains
in your heart, exalt valleys, straighten crooked paths, smoothen rough edges
and so on. God even weaves our disobedience, insensitivity and wanderings into
that process. He never wastes them. So, you may even have detours on the
journey to the second mantle.
After you have gone through the process, God brings you
to your wealthy place. He gives you your second mantle. That is the extra oil.
Many ministers refuse to go through God’s process and take short cuts. They
compromise on integrity and spirituality just to get something to show for. But
if you endure the barren moments, God will glorify you. Your wine will be
purified and refined for your generation. After you have been through the
valley of the shadow of death, He will anoint you with oil and your cup will
overflow. That is when He prepares a table before you in the presence of your
enemies. Before the valley, he led you to green pastures but after the valley
experience, He prepares a whole table before you. Then goodness and mercy,
those two angels, will follow you all the days of your life. I will continue.
